Department of Food Science and Technology
A warm welcome to the Department of Food Science and Technology (FST).
Safe and nutritious food is vital in man’s quest for survival and maintenance of good health. The field of Food Science and Technology deals with understanding the scientific nature of foods and applying such knowledge in food preservation and safety, product development, proper nutrition, value addition and packaging to mention a few. For this reason, FST is critical in the fight against both obvious and hidden hunger.
According to the International Union of Food Science and Technology (IUFoST) Congress Cape Town declaration of August 2010, ‘The Problem of Food Insecurity will not be solved by FST alone but it will certainly not be solved without the contribution of FST’.
The Department of Food Science and Technology has been in existence since the creation of the University of Agriculture, Makurdi in January, 1988. The Department currently runs undergraduate and postgraduate programmes leading to BSc, MSc and PhD degrees as well as postgraduate diploma (PGD) in Food Science and Technology.

Philosophy And Objectives
The philosophy of the Department is in tandem with that of the College and University, which is to implement the integration of teaching, research and extension in agriculture to solve real and practical problems of farming, agribusiness and agro-allied industries.
