Course Unit System and Regulations Governing Award of Degree Description.

The course unit system is an operational system in which the entire programme of courses required by a student consists of a prescribed number of units. By this, the student’s work load within a contact is defined in terms of units where one unit represents one hour of lecture or one hour of tutorials, or two, three, four or more of practical work per week, throughout the contact (equivalent of two semesters)

REGISTRATION OF COURSES:

Registration of courses takes place from the commencement of every contact session. Each Degree option has a programme examination officer who doubles as the course adviser. His duty is to monitor students academic progress and advise him/her appropriately as to how many units he or she should register for in each contact. Students are expected to complete their departmental registration forms provided to them, fill all registration formalities required and proceed to ICT for registration. After the ICT registration, Print out, signed by exam officers must be submitted to the department, sandwich office, Dean’s office and the academic office.

GRADING SYSTEM

Level of performance of students can be ascertained through the following grading system;

Mark Range (%)                   Letter Grade         Interpretation

70 -100                                           A                          Excellent

60-69                                              B                          Very Good

50-59                                              C                          Good

45-49                                              D                          Satisfactory

40-44                                              F                           Failed

PERFORMANCE PER CONTACT:

The performance of a student in any contact is determined through grading point average (GPA).  This is done through awarding of credit points in respect of each course taken during the contact.  Following are the Numerical values attached to the letter grades:

A=5 Credit points per unit of course

B=4 Credit points per unit of course

C=3 Credit point per unit of course

D=2 Credit point per unit of course

E=1 Credit point per unit of course

F=0 Credit point per unit of course

The contact GPA therefore, is the ratio of the total number of credit points earned (TPE) to the total number of credit point carried (TCC) of courses offered during the contact. Thus GPA = TPE/TCE.

ACADEMIC PROBATION

If at the end of any contact session, student’s CGPA is less than 0.70, such a student shall be placed on academic probation during the subsequent contact session.
