The United States Embassy in Abuja has expressed interest in partnering with Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University Makurdi (JoSTUM) to encourage careers in diplomacy. The American Center Coordinator, Grace Lamon, made this announcement during a visit on February 10, 2025 in the university’s Senate chamber.

Lamon emphasized the wealth of opportunities available through American Spaces—open-access learning and gathering hubs worldwide that foster engagement between local communities and the United States, both in person and virtually.

She outlined various educational opportunities, including advising for those interested in studying in the U.S., workshops on career development and English language learning, as well as programmes focused on new technologies, digital skills, and academic resources. Additionally, American Spaces offer film screenings, discussions, and lectures on leadership, entrepreneurship, current events, and international affairs.

Reaffirming the mission of the visit, American Public Diplomacy Officer, Victoria Cook emphasized the importance of strengthening mutual understanding between the United States and Nigeria. She underscored the core principles of American Spaces—the “Three E’s”: Engagement, Education, and Empowerment. According to her, these platforms provide significant educational opportunities and a broad range of public engagement initiatives beneficial to individuals of all ages.

Principal officers present during the visit included Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), Prof. F A. Ayatse, University Registrar, Dr. J. U. David, University Librarian, Prof. J. Agoh, and Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. S. Ejembi.
