BRIEF History About The College

The College of Food Technology and Human Ecology was among the few colleges that were approved in January 1988 when the University of Agriculture, Makurdi now Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University Makurdi was established. Currently, the College has three Departments namely:

  1. Food Science and Technology
  2. Home Science and Management now Family and Child Development
  3. Nutrition and Dietetics

The College offers academic programmes leading to the award of first degrees (B.Sc.), Postgraduate Diploma (PGD), Master of Science (M.Sc.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) The College objectives among others is to produce competent professionals in Food Science and Technology, Home Science and Management and Nutrition and Dietetics in adequate members as well as engage in production and research that will provide relevant and appropriate solution to the country rural agricultural and rural development problems. The College offer such special service as:

  1. Development of food product especially from locally available raw materials
  2. Improvement of traditionally process foods in terms of safety and nutrients composition
  3. Standardization of local food processing technology at home and rural community set up
  4. Research linkages with several relevant government and none government and none governmental bodies like NAFDAC and other tertiary institution
  5. Extension of research findings through workshop and rural teaching and learning by demonstration to the communities in the area of food processing, nutrition and health education, food preparation, preservation, clothing construction, textile and fashion designs, weaving and printing, interior decoration as well as family and child-development/care.
