The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Richard A. Kimbir (KSM) on Friday 8 November, 2019 received a Letter of Approval for the establishment of Center for Innovation in Procurement, Environmental and Social Standards (CIPESS) which will be funded by World Bank as one of the centers of excellence in Africa. Speaking afterwards, at the National Universities Commission (NUC) Secretariat, Abuja where the ceremony was held, Professor Kimbir expressed gratitude to God for seeing Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi (FUAM) through the rigorous and competitive process that led to its eventual selection after three previous attempts in the past. He noted that FUAM is fully ready to host the World Bank center of excellence and partner with additional regional governmental and private organizations.
The CIPESS will be funded by World Bank for a 5-year period in the first instance under the Sustainable Procurement, Environmental and Social Standards Enhancement (SPESSE) project. The Project development objective is to enhance sustainable human capacity development in procurement, environmental and social standards in the public and private sectors in Nigeria and its region, through several tracks and methods in order to support governance, increase transparency, competition, equal opportunity, sustainability, and environmental and social standards and management. This will be done through training, professionalization and research in Procurement, Environmental and Social Standards (PES). Furthermore, the Center will leverage to a great extent on ICT and collaborations with international and national partners to train its students in the following tracks in PES:
Track A: Short executive certificate courses for existing workforce.
Track B: Certificates and diploma training for school leavers.
Track C: Post-graduate diploma (PGD).
Track D: Master’s degree and PhD programmes for university graduates to focus on in-depth research.
Track E: 4-year undergraduate programme in PES.
