    Brief History of The Department

    The Department of Mathematics/Statistics/Computer Science in the College of Science, University of Agriculture, Makurdi, was established in 1989. The Department admitted its first set of students in the 1989/1990 academic session. Many of the Graduates of this programme have found employment in reputable institutions, companies and oil industries, etc. The Department was offering a B.Sc (Ed) Mathematics/Statistics/Computer Science degree programme since 1989/1990 academic session. The syllabus for the degree programme comprised – 70% Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science and 30% Education Courses. The broad nature of the degree was aimed at developing manpower in order to address the acute shortage of teachers in these areas, in the immediate University catchment’s area. However, the holders of this degree are well grounded to undertake specialized postgraduate programmes in any of the araes (Mathematics, Statistics or Computer Science).

    By the 1996/97 session the University Senate restructured the Department by introducing two new additional degree programmes – the Honours degree programmes. These could not however, commence at that time. The degree programmes eventually commenced in the 2001/2002 academic session during which the B.Sc (Ed) degree programme was transferred to the appropriate department leaving the two Honour programmes in the department. These new undergraduate degree programmes offered in the Department with effect from 2001/2002 session are;

    1. B.Sc (Hon) Mathematics/Computer Science
    2. B.Sc (Hon) Statistics/Computer Science

    The Postgraduate degree programme in the Department commence in the 2003/2004 academic session. In line with current trend in scientific research, the postgraduate programmes are multi-disciplinary and adaptive.

    1. Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) in
    2. Master of Science/Doctor of Philosophy (M.Sc/Ph.S) in
