On behalf of all staff in the Department of Biological Sciences, University of Agriculture, Makurdi I welcome all students to this Ivory Tower. Remember that we are happy to receive you for there cannot be a school without students. Also remember that time flies but cannot be caught! So keep your reasons for being here on campus in view all the time and never lose focus of your life ambitions.
Hence the wise saying that “Manner maketh man”, becomes relevant as you must realize that discipline and good conduct are necessary ingredients for achievement of set goals”. Therefore I urge each one of you to be responsible and avoid the usual campus ills such as examination misconduct, prostitution, sexual harassment, drugs and cultism, to name but a few. You are in deed being educated in both character and learning to be future and world leaders as well as form the cream of society. Thank you.
Dr. Celestine U.Aguoru
Head of Department.
Brief History of the Department
The department of biological sciences university of Agriculture Makurdi is one of the five constituent departments of the College of Science in this University. The Department is made up of four units viz Biochemistry unit, Botany unity Microbiology unit and Zoology unit and by implication houses the B.Sc. (Hons) Biochemistry which took off in the 2008/2009 session. B.Sc. (Hons) Botany, B.Sc. (Hons) Microbiology and B.Sc. (Hons) Zoology) it could be regarded as four departments in one.
Prior to the establishment of the single honors degree programmes in the life sciences as listed above, the department of Biological sciences between 1980-1987 was part of then school of Foundation Studies which housed all Basic sciences of then F U T Makurdi, and later University of Jos Makurdi campus. The fortunes of the department turned around when the then University of Jos Makurdi campus was granted the status of a full fledged university in 1988 as one of the three Universities of Agriculture established by the then Federal Military Government. The biological sciences unit of the scho901 of foundation studies was accorded the status, of full academic department in what used to be known as college of science, Agriculture and science Education (CSASE).
Between 1988-2001 the department was providing training for undergraduates students in what was known as Bachelor of Education degree in Biological Science B.Sc (Hons) ED. In undergraduate students in single honors Botany, Microbiology and Zoology after obtaining approval from the senate of the University. The Biochemistry programme could not immediately take off with the other programmes due to dearth of manpower. The B.Sc (Hons) Biochemistry therefore took off in the 2008/2009 session bringing with its full compliment of all programmes housed by the Department. The B.Sc. (Ed) programme has been gradually phased out and transferred to the Department of Science Education of a sister college to the college of science. The first set of our B.Sc. (Hons.) students have graduated from Botany, Microbiology and Zoology and are enjoying gainful employment in different areas. The B.Sc. (Hons) Biochemistry is yet to produce gradutes as it was the last to take off just in 2008/2009 academic session.
