Department of Animal Nutrition

It is indeed with honor and privilege that I provide a profile on Animal Nutrition Department, University of Agriculture, Makurdi. This Department came into being about five years ago and is staffed with highly qualified professionals who are specialized in different fields of Animal Nutrition. The Department has three equipped laboratories for its undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. The Department has proven to be very relevant in sustainable agricultural development agenda of Nigeria. We take cognizance of its important roles in developing a vibrant livestock industry in the country for household food security, quality control, employment generation and wealth creation.
The prime goal of the Department remains the reshaping of feeding standards and quality control under the Food and Agricultural Organization. The principal objectives include the attainment of self reliance and self sufficiency in biochemistry and qualitative analysis of the feeding ingredients commonly used in our livestock feeds. The curriculum is designed to effectively deliver theoretical, laboratory / technical skills to empower graduates of the Department economically.

Dr. (Mrs.) C.D. Tuleun B.Sc, M.Sc (ABU), Ph.D. (UAM)

Philosophy And Objectives
Philosophy of the Department
To produce agricultural graduates that are adequate in learning and character and who are suitably equipped with practical skills to fit into all the niches of the agricultural sector, in and outside Nigeria, be it academic, technical or policy formulation. They are also to be able to generate/create employment.
Objectives of the Department:
(1) To impart to the students the knowledge to be able to increase the productivity of animal agriculture through the use of improved feed and feeding research
(2)To disseminate research findings on feeds and nutrition to commercial and subsistent livestock producers.
(3)To generate highly skilled manpower for the agricultural sector, research stations, universities, government establishments, the private sector and related industries (locally and internally).
Brief History of The Department

From inception, when what is today the University of Agriculture Makurdi was founded as the Federal University of Technology Makurdi in 1980, became the Makurdi campus of the University of Jos in 1984 and eventually the Federal University of Agriculture Makurdi in 1988, the College of Animal Science of the University offered courses in Monogastric and Ruminant Animal Nutrition as components of the Animal Production curriculum at all levels. As the University metamorphosed to the apt status of a full fledged specialized University, the need arose to expand the Animal Nutrition units of the college of Animal Science to provide the much needed leverage for the actualization of the philosophy of the College of Animal Science and the Mission and Mandate of the University.
The Department of Animal Nutrition was thus carved out of the old Department of Animal Production in March, 2002 by the then Governing Council of the University. The Department however actually became functional in January, 2005 with the appointment of a pioneer Head in the person of Dr. F. G. Kaankuka.
HEADSHIP

Dr. F.G. Kaankuka was appointed as the pioneer Head in 2005, while Dr. (Mrs.) C.D. Tuleun was appointed Head of Department in 2008 and has continued to date in the task of building the Department.
