Department of Agricultural Extension and Communication

Agricultural Extension remains the major instrument for the effective mobilization of the rural, semi-urban and urban dwellers in the continuing efforts by Governments, Non-governmental organization and other agencies in the world over to attain sustainable social and economic development.  This situation has obviously necessitated the use of appropriate and re-energized training approaches in the preparation of extension personnel.

The knowledge sharing process has become quite complicated, requiring a change in strategies.  One of such strategies is the provision of  broad – based knowledge in all spheres of agriculture to enable graduates functions as practical farmers with good conceptual and entrepreneurial skills as well as competent communication  abilities.  In order to ensure that our graduates obtain and use credible as well as quality information in decision-making, it has become necessary to expand the frontiers of extension education and training to include richer and more stimulating courses and processes.

This website is a compendium of relevant information to guide students, staff and administrators in approaching the philosophy, mission, direction and all the academic ramifications of agricultural extension and Rural Development.

History

The Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi was created on 2nd November, 1992 through decree No. 48 which was promulgated by the then Federal Military Government of Nigeria with the cardinal objectives of identifying Nigerian agricultural needs, problems and proffering solutions to them, providing and promoting sound basic scientific training as a foundation for the development of agriculture and allied disciplines, promoting and emphasizing teaching, research and extension of agricultural innovations etc.   It was in that same year that the Department of Agricultural Extension and Communication was created with two core staff namely, Dr. C.P.O. Obinne and Mrs. I. Kalu and two Graduate Assistants, Mr. Y. Audu and Mrs. V.A. Okwoche as well as one Higher Technical Officer, Mr. F.E. Omoregbe.  From a core staff strength of two, the Department has grown to its present academic staff strength of 15 out of these two of them are Professors, One is Associate Professor, 5 Doctors and the rest M.Sc. holders.  The Department of Agricultural Extension ad Communication was created to meet the mandate of the Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi.  Therefore, in keeping with the University’s philosophy of innovation and service, this Department was committed to teaching, research and sharing of agricultural innovations among the target beneficiaries, most of whom are rural farmers.  From 1992 to 2009, this Department hs been jointly producing graduates with the Department of Agricultural Economics in B. Agric. Economics and Extension.

However,, following the advent of the current global economics crisis with the concomitant excruciating food crisis, poverty, unemployment, fallen standard of education, fallen standard of  living coupled with environmental degradation, and the dire need to bring about sustainable national development, a new idea was conceived by the academic staff of the Department of Agricultural Extension and Communication to bifurcate the College of Agricultural Economics, Extension and Management Technology into B. Agric Economics and B. Agric. Extension and Rural Development degree programmes.  The rationale behind this was to help produce graduates who will be equipped with enough corpus of scientific and sociological skills, and knowledge with which they can grapple with a plethora of rural, agricultural and ecological problems, knowing fully well that 80 per cent of our agricultural labour force lives in rural areas, where it subsists on subsistence agriculture.  The task of ensuring a wholistic national development is onerous,
hectic and needs to start with rural and agricultural development.  That calls for the development of human resources needed to handle this task.  This idea was later developed into a new curriculum and sold to the University Senate At its 206th Regular meeting, Senate approved the planned bifurcation on 18th December, 2008. On the basis of this approval which was upheld by N.U.C. in 2009, the Department of Agricultural Extension and Rural Development Communication has since mounted B. Agricultural Extension and Rural Development degree programme, the appellation of this Department shall be changed to “Department of Agricultural Extension and Rural Development” in the near future.  This Department also runs Postgraduate programme leading to M.Sc.
and Ph.D. in the following specialized areas:-
